Moorlands

The moors of the Southern AONB are wild and beautiful.

Blubberhouses and Barden Moors, Kex Gill and Pockstones Moors form the watershed overlooking upper Wharfedale and Bolton Abbey to the west. They are designated as a Sites of Special Scientific Interest and are internationally important for birds.

The moorland supports plants such as bilberry, cowberry, sundew, cotton grass and cross-leaved heath. These plants in turn support bird species which include Red Grouse, Curlew, Merlin and Golden Plover.

There is a network of rights of way across farmland onto the moors and once the unenclosed land is reached, much of the land is accessible on foot in accordance with the right of access to open country. For further information on access visit our 'Open Access' pages.
