Theakstons Brewery

Theakstons brewery has been brewing beer in Masham since 1827 when Robert Theakston founded the brewery. It started as a small family business, which grew exponentially as their beer became popular.

After Robert's death in 1875, the business passed to his son Thomas. He moved the whole business to what was at the time a state-of-the-art facility in Paradise Fields. In 1919 Theakstons took over Lightfoots brewery  and turned their buildings into bottling stores and offices.

During the 1970's, the brewery was integrated into Scottish and Newcastle Breweries, but was still run by the Theakston family. However, in 1987 Theakstons was finally bought by Scottish and Newcastle. As a final twist to the story, the brewery was bought back by the Theakston family in October 2003 and it is now an independent family business once more.

The Theakstons brewery has a visitor centre and shop and runs excellent tours of the site. To avoid disappointment prior booking is essential.
