Black Sheep Brewery
|
The Black Sheep Brewery was established in Masham in October 1992, by the former head of Theakstons, Paul Theakston. Paul left Theakstons after the Scottish and Newcastle takeover
and set up a new brewery in the old maltings building which was
once part of Lightfoot's Brewery. A lot of time and money was
spent breathing new life into the old building. The
brewing copper, mash tun and hop back came as a matched set from
the old Hartley's Brewery in Ulverston in the Lake District and
other equipment was gradually brought together to create a
traditional brewery.
The name Black Sheep sits well with the area, speaks volumes
about the maverick attitude to the multi-nationals seeking to
dominate the brewing industry and captured the essence of the
family struggle that led to the breweries birth.
The brewery is now a year round attraction in Masham
and there are informative and amusing brewery tours, a shop
and a bistro serving home cooked food.
