Pateley Bridge

The attractive town of Pateley Bridge has witnessed great changes over the centuries. Once a mining town, with a thriving textile industry closeby, the construction of the railway line saw the town grow and prosper during the 19th Century.

Over the years there have been Breweries and Police Courts to Cocoa Houses and Dance Halls. Although some buildings have disappeared many remain largely unchanged. Nowadays, the town attracts many tourists and there are lots of antique shops, delicatessens and the oldest sweet shop in England. The building dates from the 1630's and the business opened in 1827.

You can discover more about the town's fascinating history by following the Heritage Trail (available at local shops, Post Office and Museum) as it winds its way through the historic streets and lanes. At each of the 18 stops there is information to help you uncover the past uses of the building or site.

For the more adventurous walker, why not follow the outer trail which takes you into beautiful countryside above Pateley Bridge. The route passes a number of historically interesting sites and takes in fantastic views of Nidderdale.
