Places to Visit
Every view over the AONB's countryside has a story
that lies behind it, a history of people making their
mark on the natural environment. Like the Cistercian monks,
the course of whose lives can be traced at Fountains Abbey, one of
the National Trust's most visited properties. Like lead miners who
walked to work along packhorse tracks you can
follow today into an eerily quiet landscape that was once
a hive of industry. There are plenty of places to
visit in the AONB, where these and other accounts can be
experienced at first hand.

To help you navigate your way around the AONB we have
divided it into five main areas - Upper Nidderdale - Lower Nidderdale -
Mashamshire - The East and The South. Under each
section you will find lots of local information, places to visit
and ideas for walks in the area.
