Buy locally produced goods!
When visiting somewhere for the first time, or for the 100th
time, it is always tempting to sample local delicacies on
offer. But buying locally produced products has environmental as
well as gastronomic benefits:
- Shops which buy from local farms are helping to maintain the
diverse farmed landscape that characterises the area
- Local food is fresh and accountable, you can trace where the
meat or eggs you buy has come from
- Short distances between farm, abattoir and point of sale not
only reduces stress for the animal but also minimises mileage which
reduces pollution
- Supporting local shops and suppliers supports local jobs and
the wider rural economy
- Local shops also have social functions, in rural areas they
often offer a variety of other services other than their main
purpose, allow traders to keep in contact with the elderly and
infirm and provide shopping outlets for those who cannot afford or
are no longer able to drive
You can buy directly from the producer or go to a
farmers' market where stall holders must have grown, bred, caught,
pickled, brewed or baked the goods themselves.
